Surprise Encounter with Sasquatch

By Chriss Calf

A colleague and friend of mine decided to share his encounter with a sasquatch. Finally, an account from someone I know and trust to tell me the truth.  Read on, friends of CryptoVille. It’s a doozy!

It was ten or so years ago, far up in the mountains of West Virginia, where a colleague and friend of mine encountered Sasquatch, to both of their shock.  My friend wants to remain anonymous, so I’ll call him Mike. He asked that I withhold the exact location as it’s private property and they don’t want strangers roaming around in search of the big guy.

At the time Mike was 14 years old. He and his cousin Diana, 12 years old, were riding a 4-wheeler up a mountain trail. They were heading for a shelter that someone had built up on the mountain, a nice place that even had an outdoor grill. Mike was teaching Diana how to drive and handle a 4-wheeler.

They were about a half mile from the nearest house and it was starting to get dark. Mike figures it was around 8:30 PM in the summer, either July or August. Diana maneuvered up the trail, approaching the shelter which was around a bend to the left.

As they roared around the bend, she brought the 4-wheeler to an abrupt stop. At the edge of the forest where it met the gravel road, they saw a huge bipedal creature staring at them. Mike said its head came up to the first big branch which they later estimated was seven feet off the ground. The cousins stared, frozen with fear, from about 30 feet away.

Even though it was twilight, Mike said he knew it wasn’t an animal face – it looked more human. The shoulders were big and the arms definitely were long, the hands reaching below its hips. Because of the lighting, he couldn’t tell what color it was because it just looked black in the forest.

All of a sudden, the creature pivoted and started walking up the hill behind it, away from them. Though it disappeared quickly into the darkness, they could clearly hear the sound of tree limbs breaking and snapping off as though a tank was driving through the forest knocking down everything in its path.

Diana was too scared to move, so Mike pushed her aside and quickly turned the 4-wheeler around. They flew down the trail back to the safety of home. They never felt like it was following them; it had been going in the opposite direction.

Mike told me some facts about this area that would make it enticing to a hungry Sasquatch. The area was/is remote, and his Aunt had put in a big pond stocked with fish. She also fed the deer that visited from the forest, not to hunt them, but to enjoy their presence.

In addition, there was a working farm nearby that probably had lots of good things that a Sasquatch might like to eat.

Mike said that since that encounter, he’s never heard or seen a Sasquatch or suspected any weird behavior around their property that he would attribute to them.

Since then the family has used the property as they wished, never fearing the presence of Sasquatch, just going about their business.

More recently, Mike was hiking with another cousin, Ed. They were about 7 miles into a 10-mile trek somewhere around the property. They got talking and Ed admitted to Mike that he had an encounter with a Sasquatch when he was around 11 years old.

Ed’s Account

Ed said it was evening and he was headed back home down a mountain trail with a flashlight. He was carrying a shotgun as well.

Suddenly he looked into the woods and saw a creature crouching with its back to him. It turned and he was shocked to see a human-like face but the rest of it was covered in thick brown fur. He could see it in the light cast from his flashlight.

Ed panicked and shot his shotgun at the creature. The Sasquatch leapt up and raced off in the other direction.  Ed ran home in the opposite direction. But he never forgot what he saw, nor the terror and shock at what he had seen.

Appalachia Hot Spot

We’ve heard for years how prevalent Sasquatch sightings are throughout the Appalachian Mountain chain, from Georgia, up through and including New England. Remember the show, Mountain Monsters? They spoke to many people who had strange sightings and phenomena occurring throughout the state of West Virginia. The rest of the show got quite silly, but the eyewitness interviews were always interesting.

But their range is not limited to Appalachia, as we know. They certainly seem to move around a lot. So keep your eyes open and your cameras handy – you never know what’s around the next bend!

  1. I lived in WV for about 10 years and I can attest to the wildness and density of the forests there. It would be very easy to get lost, and I believe it is easy for Sasquatch to remain hidden there. Thanks for sharing these intriguing stories!

  2. I grew up on 27 acres in rural Washington State near the B.C. Candian border. I was always running around the woods alone with my dog. One time my dog raced ahead of me to the house because we were almost there, and it was dusk. All of a sudden, my entire field of vision was looking at a big, hairy chest of long dark brown fur! Whatever it was breathed down on me by at least a foot or two taller than me (I’m 5’8). I turned around and ran making a half-moon, zig zag pattern through the trees to get back to the house. It was not Black bear fur which I have seen and felt from personal experience. There has never been a sighting of a Grizzly bear in that area, though a shaggy grizzly would be the only other possibility. I was 16 at the time and the area is dense pine forests. Maybe Grizzly, maybe Sasquatch.

    • Melanie, I think if that had been a grizzly bear, you’d have been dead. From all I’ve heard about them from hunters, they are almost always fatal encounters. I think you know what you saw – your gut feeling is telling you so. You are very lucky to have made it home and didn’t disappear. Thank you for sharing your experience!

And thank you for visiting CryptoVille! … Susan (Curator of CryptoVille)

      • My gut feeling is “I don’t know what it was, but it was big and hairy like I’d never seen.” I’m just grateful whatever it was didn’t attack me. A grizzly or a sasquatch could likely have run me down if it had been determined to do so.
