Fairy Forest of Pulga, India

By Art of Animation on Tumblr

Known for a myriad of spices that almost fragrance the air, delicious teas, and a rich cultural heritage, India is also a land that believes in fairies. Today we’ll visit the beautiful and enchanting forest known as the Fairy Forest of Pulga and see how it got its name, and whether there are real fairies lingering in its woodlands. Getting to this lovely and mysterious realm isn’t for the faint-hearted. It involves a lot of traveling and then even more hiking. The forest is located in or near the Himalaya mountains, near the border between India and Kashmir. The area is called Pulga in Himachal Pradesh.

Once there, the forest and mountain vistas are exquisite! Trails wind their way throughout the forest where visitors are treated to views of huge pine forests and the Parvati River that runs through the area, occasionally breaking into beautiful waterfalls as it continues its trek down the mountain.

Fairy Origins

So how did this beautiful forest get its name?  According to Ridhima Shukla for Tripoto.com, “Some say when the first light of the morning sun hits the towering pine trees, the forest gets illuminated and it looks like fairies have landed inside.”

Another explanation goes that when you view the branches of the trees, they look like the wings of fairies and you’ll feel like you’re in an enchanted land. So far, no reports of visitors actually having seen forest fairies, but who knows? They’ve got a lot of places to hide!

In my search for information about this forest I came upon quite a few books about fairies in India and they seem well entrenched in their literature. I’ll have to see what more I can find out about them to share with you in future posts.

Pulga is a remote place, full of little delights and surprises. Perhaps the biggest is that the area is filled with visiting Israelis. They visit so often that the local cafes serve Israeli food, all of which looked delicious in the photos I saw.
