Witch’s Head Nebula

Hi Friends! WordPress has set a challenge for its bloggers to try and write 30 blogs in the 30 days of November. I’m going to give it a try and see what happens. I don’t mean to bug you with posts, we’re just having some fun this month.  So to begin …..

If a tree falls out in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? I think so.  Other animals can hear it, so just because a human hasn’t heard it, doesn’t mean it didn’t make any noise.

WitchsHeadNebulaSo what about a witch screaming in the depths of space?

NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) captured a picture recently of what they’re calling the Witch’s Head Nebula. It does seem to resemble the profile of a witch, mouth wide, possibly screaming.

This nebula is hundreds of light-years from Earth, set in the Orion constellation.

So that begs the question, if a witch screams in the depths of space, does she still make a sound?

The way I see it is this: it’s not a real witch, so it’s probably not making any sound. However, let’s say there was some weird solar wind or whatever blowing making some kind of sound in the vacuum of space – just like the tree, if we aren’t there to hear it doesn’t mean it’s not making a noise. Furthermore, maybe the aliens flying around can hear it.

Have I still got Halloween on the brain? LOL!!

What do you think?

  1. What an amazing picture! Thank you. However, because space is a vacuum, soundwaves cannot travel through it. Whether she is screaming or not there would be no noise to hear.
