People in the Washington DC and Maryland areas had a bit of a surprise Wednesday when they spotted what looked like a UFO on the back of a flatbed truck traveling along Interstate 270 and later, Interstate 495. The color, size, and shape looked just like the classic UFO vehicle that people have been seeing for decades!
Turns out it was just an X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System, aka, a drone. The navy was moving it from Edwards Air Force Base in California to the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland for testing. Its greyish color was intentional in order to match the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
The Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland is, according to a Navy website, “… the Navy’s principal research, development, test, evaluation, engineering and fleet support activity for naval aircraft, engines, avionics, aircraft support systems and ship/shore/air operations.” They do a lot of testing of equipment and vehicles there, hence the transportation of the drone to the base.
The drone, made by Northrup Grumman, flies from and lands on aircraft carriers. Naval personnel would be testing their skills at controlling it at the air base, before trying it at sea.
That sure got us thinking … it looks like a classic UFO, and there’s more than one of them! How many reported UFO sightings are just mistaken drones? Would the average person on the street look into the sky at night and think, oh, there’s a UFO, no wait, it’s a Navy drone?!
To us, this is a bit frustrating. HOW do you tell them all apart? I guess it will just take careful observation and recording and investigation. There’s nothing else to do, but that. (The photo to the right shows a picture of this drone.)

There was a similar sighting late last year, also in the same area. Here’s that video:
Til the next time!
