One of our readers kindly shared a photo of what looked like a crescent (or boomerang) headed salamander. I was intrigued so I decided to do some research.
Turns out this little guy is a fake according to biologist Patrick J. Schembri in his article in the Sunday Times of Malta. BUT he did exist over 270 million years ago. His name was Diplocaulus and he was once an early salamander-like amphibian. The little guy in the dish seen in the photo is either photo-shopped or a photograph of a toy replica.
Some may be disappointed to learn of the hoax, but it’s still fun to know that creatures like this actually DID exist once upon a time!
Til the next time!
Much like Jurassic Park, I see these creatures(the small and managable ones) making a comeback through genetic engingeering. So who knows the little guy just might be back if they can find suitable DNA. I would so love to Dodos roaming around somewhere.
As long as they don’t bring back the BIG ones! LOL!!
I wouldn’t want the “big” one roaming around again either. lol I can’t run that fast.
Photoshop is a wonderful tool for editing photos. But I just hate it when people use it to try and dupe us with fakes……
I no I sound like I’m full of shit but I saw one of these animals alive in real life I thought it was just an exotic reptile. Then years later I went to look it up on Google and realize it was prehistoric amphibian but the color of the animal I saw was yellow.
Well that’s amazing, Cisco! Where did you see the animal? Any photos of it?
